Raising Money to Cure Breast Cancer

Update: Susan's daughter Carolina will be swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco on May 11th to raise money for Dr. Moasser's lab.   For more background on Susan's story and Dr. Moasser's groundbreaking research, read below.  She hopes you'll consider donating to the cause- let's end cancer together!

Susan's Story

I was diagnosed with stage 3 triple negative breast cancer on August 27th, 2014.  Further tests showed the cancer had spread to my lymph nodes as well. Triple negative was scary because the only option for this form of breast cancer was to undergo the most aggressive chemotherapy treatment.  The odds were stacked against me.  The goal was to kill all cancer cells by the end of my treatments – but the likelihood of success was only 15%.

Road to Being Cancer-Free

The last eight months have been brutal. I have endured 20 chemotherapy sessions, been hospitalized six times with no immunity, have had to undergo surgeries that had unforeseen complications, and soon will start five weeks of daily radiation. At moments, I’ve felt like I have been tested more than I could handle. But I was relieved when my recent pathology report showed that the cancer is gone, eradicated by the intense chemotherapy, which is called a Complete Pathological Response.  As of March 12th, 2015, I am “Cancer-Free”—and in about five years, we’ll know if I’ve indeed been cured of this disease.

Champions in My Corner

Battling breast cancer is the hardest thing I’ve ever done; it stripped me to nothing. I kept getting knocked down again and again.  There is no way I could have made it without the support of my family, friends and my oncologist Dr. Mark Moasser at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).  When I was hospitalized and exhausted after each chemotherapy treatment, Dr. Moasser was by my side giving me pep talks to bolster my will to live. Putting my trust in him allowed me to push through and find reserves of strength I didn’t know were there.

Join Me – Together We Can Make a Difference in the Fight against Cancer

My husband Mauricio, our daughters Sofia (12) and Carolina (11), and I are enormously thankful to Dr. Moasser and the incredible medical staff at UCSF.  We are launching this campaign with the goal of raising $20,000 to support Dr. Moasser’s research, so that he can get closer to a cure.  Throughout the year, we will be putting together fundraising initiatives to help us reach this goal.  First up, our daughter Sofia is asking her friends and family to donate to this cause instead of giving her gifts for her 13th birthday (April 23).  Next up, we are planning some interesting swims for later in the year to raise money towards our $20,000 goal. We will keep you posted on these swims on this page and on Swim4Good.

Please join us by making a tax-deductible gift.

For those that wish to donate with a non-US credit card, please use the following link: https://gpx.globalpay.wu.com/ucsffoundation and be sure to include Dr. Mark Moasser Cancer Research (B2560/PM16) in order to associate your gift to this crowdfunding effort.

Life-Changing Research

Dr. Moasser leads a multidisciplinary team that conducts clinical trials of novel therapies for patients with breast cancer. His translational laboratory research program focuses specifically on two genes—HER2 and HER3—that cause aggressive forms of breast cancer. By better understanding these cancer-causing genes (oncogenes), Dr. Moasser and his team can develop highly effective, potentially eradicative treatments for this virulent form of cancer. For more information on Dr. Moasser’s lab you can visit its web site at lab.moasser.com.

Together we can truly make a difference to accelerate scientific breakthroughs in cancer treatment.  Thank you for your support!
