UCSF Jack of Hearts helps families cope with cancer
"There is a community of people around the globe who love you very much; there are no limits to what you can achieve; you will determine your destiny; your story has yet to be written; and you have nothing to fear. Live life full of courage son; your Dad & Mom are in front of you, behind you, and always by your side."
Your gift to the UCSF Jack of Hearts Fund will support families in the midst of crisis caused by childhood cancer.
Our son, Jack, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma on August 5, 2014. At the time, Jack was just three months old and childhood cancer was the farthest thing from our minds. What began as a routine exam to address a “lazy” eye quickly changed into something far more serious. We were shocked and saddened to learn our newborn son not only had irreversible vision loss, but also had an aggressive malignant mass growing in his eye.
Jack immediately began treatment that includes systemic chemotherapy and monthly eye examinations under anesthesia (“EUA”) to evaluate his existing tumor and investigate the possibility of additional tumors in his eyes. Thankfully, Jack had an amazing response to his first round of chemotherapy and much of the tumor was destroyed. But his road to full health is long. Jack will require additional rounds of chemotherapy and monthly monitoring under anesthesia for a number of years. Our lives have been forever changed by his diagnosis.
In the midst of all of this, we have been humbled by the support, kindness, and love we have received from family, friends, and the medical community at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. We are extremely fortunate to live close to this children’s hospital, which provides access to state of the art medical care, prominent doctors, expert and compassionate nursing care, and children who exhibit a level of grace, poise, determination, and beauty that affirms our belief in hope and humanity.
Please consider pledging whatever amount you can afford to help countless children and their families faced with the kinds of challenges Jack is going through.
The good fortune of access to such medical care does not negate the misfortune of childhood cancer. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, time stops. But the world outside a pediatric oncology unit continues. Parents are confronted with impossible dilemmas as they attempt to balance responsibilities to other members of their family, their jobs, maintaining or obtaining access to health insurance, and paying bills. It is in that spirit that we have created the Jack of Hearts Fund, which seeks to raise money to assist families in the midst of crisis caused by childhood cancer.
Money raised by the Jack of Hearts Fund will help parents and children during their family’s effort to bring normalcy to the most abnormal of circumstances. Parents will receive financial assistance for housing, travel, and time away from work. Children will receive household items like tablets, games, and other items that make their hospital stay more comfortable. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco has a huge job to do. The Jack of Hearts Fund seeks to continue their life-changing efforts by creating a sustainable stream of funds to provide practical assistance to children and their families at a time of great need. Please consider pledging whatever amount you can afford to help countless children and their families faced with the kinds of challenges Jack is going through.

Special thanks to the Niles Rotary Foundation in making the UCSF Jack-of-Hearts Fund their 2015 fund-a-need project. Without this support we could never have had our message carried to 396 attendees at this year's Auction Dinner and received 120 donations.
